Travelers Insurance just released the results of their new Consumer Risk Index Survey that they conducted in May of 2013. The purpose of the survey was to discover the types of risks Americans believe to be most prevalent in their day-to-day lives. The results were very telling:

  • At the top of the list, 68% of Americans fear about struggling financially.
  • Coming in a close 2nd at 64%, Americans fear privacy loss through technology; such as their bank accounts being hacked, identity theft, and confidential information being lost through a stolen electronic device.
  • Many Americans also feel that distracted driving due to cell phone use is a huge risk that they face everyday.
  • Finally, 70% of Americans shared that they fear damages from severe weather, due to its more frequent occurrence the past few years.

While these common risks can be frightening, the Travelers survey also revealed the top ways people prepare themselves for the unexpected:

  • Many people have routine safety checks and maintenance performed on their vehicles.
  • 84% of those surveyed have carbon monoxide and smoke detectors in their homes.
  • 3/4 of those surveyed say they are constantly on the look out for distracted drivers.
  • 1/2 of those surveyed said that they have extra water/food/ and flashlights in the event of inclement weather.
